That night was utterly soul destroying, the second night, the night that all hope was wiped, the night it hit us that this was real. Funny, not three days ago I'd been scarcely able to believe that my life could be so fantastic. I had no trouble believing that my life could have so much ... doom. I was doomed from the moment I was born for fate to have some sort of overbearing grudge with me.
Ben and I were lying on the floor of the cave at opposite ends of its large-bathroom sized chamber, in pitch blackness, and with a cotton blanket each wrapped tightly like cocoons around ourselves. I doubted he was asleep, and I really wanted to talk to him, but he was so silent. Was he even there? The cave smelled of air. Had he opened the door and snuck away? Without me? He'd only known me four days, I guess he didn't have any real affiliation to me...but no...I could hear him moving. Ah, yeah, he yawned, he was still there, and not asleep.
"Ben?" I murmured, "You deserve a raise."
"I'll demand one as soon as I ninja-kick my way out of here and parcour South down to the BBC Television Centre."
"I bet you're good at parcour. I can just see you sprinting around on the roof of your boarding school."
"Yeah, up to eight minutes after the curfew!"
"Was boarding school really like that?"
"Not in the slightest. It was just normal school except I slept there at night."
"I always thought that maybe it was a bit like Hogwarts. Not the wizards, the sense of camaradery. I want that."
"I think you're overestimating the kids whose parents can afford private education."
"Brilliant self-esteem."
"I'm an exception."
I like to think he winked at that.
"You don't feel like you belong at your school?"
"Kinda. But it's like, there's people there I like, my best friends, and I belong with them, but not in school. My classes ... Depending on who's there, I quite often feel like an outsider. I don't mind, though, 'cause I'm in the In Crowd on Twitter. Actually I don't think there is one. I just know I feel like that's one place I know I DEFINITELY belong."
Ben chuckled.
"What?"
"I think Guntas is psychic."
"Huh?"
"Guntas just tweeted me saying that Shannen and Eliza are having a really worrying conversation right now."
I rolled like a headless worm that had just noticed the entrance to Worm-vana towards Ben so I could wriggle my way into the conversation (I apologise wholeheartedly for the pun). He had the phone balanced on his chest with the screen perpendicular to his body. His face looked ridiculous in the light. His chin was tucked into his collarbone so he could see what he was typing, and evidently this required large amounts of concentration because his brow was furrowed to the point of inrecognition.
